For mildewed leather shoes or bags, rub in a thin layer of vaseline.

To clean solid silver:- Put foil in a bowl & lay silver on top. Pour on boiling water, add 3tbsps bic. of soda and leave for 10 minutes. Polish with a soft cloth.

Remove dried-on food or drinks from flasks by filling with water & 2tbsps of baking soda. Leave to soak for a few hours.

Soak smelly flasks in a solution of water and distilled white vinegar & rinse well.

A teaspoon of bic. of soda on a damp cloth gets rid of most of the stains that propriety cream cleansers do.

Add a few drops of essential oil to water in a spray bottle - this can be used lightly when wet dusting.

White wine vinegar is a great surface cleaner for glass - fill a spray bottle with half vinegar & half water.

To stop luggage developing an old stale smell when they are not in use, put a few sugar lumps in them before storing.

Get rid of soft cheese and other sticky foods from a grater by rubbing both sides with a lemon half or cut potato.

Sharpen kitchen scissors by cutting through a double layer of foil.

Sterilise a dishcloth by microwaving it for one minute - just make sure it is wet.

When frying food put a small container of vinegar next to the stove to absorb the frying smell.

Remove rust from a knife by sticking it in an onion for an hour, then move it back & forth so the juice can do its work.

When washing bedlinen add a few drops of lavender oil to the fabric conditioner dispenser drawer.

If your wardrobe is humid, hang a piece of chalk inside a little cloth bag to absorb moisture.

Place sugar cubes in a silver coffee pot to banish old musty smells.

Use a soft cloth to rub stainless steel with a small amount of baby oil. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth then buff with a dry cloth.
